Thank you for being a subscriber to my reader's reef! I'm thrilled to share my next short story, Chasing the Tide, with you. This month, we follow Lisa and Darius, a couple navigating the vibrant pulse of the coral reef city of Geechmobo.

When I envisioned this series, I wanted to create a slice-of-life fantasy centered on mermaids in a coral reef in the Atlantic, just off the Lowcountry coast of Northeast Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. These characters are part Soulaan with Gullah Geechee heritage and part sea god and goddess, with a sea ancestry that connects them to deities like Olokun and Yemoja. It’s a world where magic meets the daily struggles of being a mermaid, and where ancient legacy meets the relatable challenges of life beneath the waves.

In Chasing the Tide, I explore the "Domino Effect of Misunderstandings"—that specific, heart-sinking moment when a single missed connection triggers a spiral of doubt. I wrote this for anyone who has ever felt the sting of a misunderstanding that grew out of control. It’s a reminder that while the currents of life can pull us in opposite directions, the choice to swim back to each other—and the grace of giving the benefit of the doubt—is the most powerful movement we can make. In the reef, communication isn't just about sound; it’s about listening with your soul.
